Funny Noir

At first the reader's voice was hard to focus on, I think because of how he interpreted "hard boiled". When I read the book myself the voice was more about humor, about making affectionate fun of the genre and taking delight in ridiculous and inventive metaphors. I soon got used to his way of reading and possibly he got a better feel for the music of the language in Kinky Friedman's first tale of the Village Irregulars. I agree with another reviewer that all the books in this series need to be added to the Audible catalog. These are the kind of novels that can be enjoyed again and again because the richly textured silliness is so sustaining, especially in dark times.

If I ain’t a half-matured cigar

I don’t pretend to know the Kinkster, but I could hear him speaking to me the whole time. I guess that’s a testament to the professionalism of Mike Dawson.

I am late to this party RIP Kinky a great writer

I have always heard that his books were great. I finally found the time to listen to this first novel. I was not disappointed. Living in Houston with relatives in Kerrville, Comfort, and all over the hill country. I have been around Kinky for many years and I am finding the time to catch up on the pleasure of his talents. His writing, Music, and humor will live forever.

As gold today as it was in the 80’s

Kinky may not be for everyone, but if you get it, you love him. The seminal work by the saddle-stool detective introduced some of the best characters to ever jump off a page. Kinky has the writing style one can only achieve by living years as a jaded, forgotten, and under appreciated country musician. To not delve into a Friedman mystery is an injustice to the long forgotten dream of Americana that resides within us all.
