Joe Odin is the world's greatest guesser, a carnival legend who can tell you your weight, your profession, or your favorite brand of whiskey with nothing but a glance and a grubby dollar. He uses his flamboyant style of deduction to peer into small-town secrets and unravel his favorite puzzles of all - murders.

Primrose Whistler is just 17 years old, a trailer-park firecracker with green hair and a talent for trouble. After she witnesses a brutal attack and is almost killed at the county fair, she and Odin forge an unlikely partnership of razor-sharp wits and masterful deduction to stop a killer before he silences Prim for good.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Colby Elliott deftly captures each unique, often endearing, character in this mystery...Elliott is particularly entertaining in his creation of Odin, a trickster character...his rendering of Prim and her young circle is also fascinating and realistic. Heavy accents - Jamaican, Southern, and rural - add to the atmosphere of this puzzler." (AudioFile)

Prim comes to Hygiene Colorado to visit her Aunt Vern,. So begins mystery and murder for her and the worlds best guesser, Odin to solve. There are enough twists and turns to keep the listener guessing. I hope there will be more Prim and Odin adventures in the future.

The narration was well done. The characters were excellently portrayed.

Where does Guesswork rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not my usual genre, but it was well done. Interesting and not the usual characters. This is a teen young adult book read by Colby Elliott. As such, don't expect Jack Reacher. Still fast moving plot kept my interest and I listened straight through. The characters are developed well, with feasible background.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Joe Odin, the Carney guesser. He was the perfect agent to Prim.

Have you listened to any of Colby Elliott’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listen to this narrator / actor before. But, I'll look for him. He does a good job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I actually did listen in one go.

A FUN teen / young adult mystery adventure

This was a very good book. I enjoyed getting to know Prim and her aunt Vern. I would have liked this book to be longer, but the end left everything open enough for a sequel. I loved how the author kept me guessing. I definitely hope there will be more adventures for Prim in the future.
The narrator was excellent. My only minor complaint was the way he said "ugg" I am not sure if the author wrote it that way, or if he wrote "ugh" and the narrator said it wrong. But really I cannot complain too much. He still did an excellent job with the voices, even though Prim is clearly a young woman.

What made the experience of listening to Guesswork the most enjoyable?

The narrator was great. The only thing I didn't really like was the lack of a female narrator. I know 2 are more expensive than one, but if I had to choose I think it would be a good female voice that can do men's voice's well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Guesswork?

I liked the relationship between Prim and Emma. When they had scenes together I was very focused.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Prim figures out the real murderer.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It was good but not THAT good. I enjoyed listening to it and would probably listen to a second in series. Good concept for a series.
