Before he had a driver's license, Ryan Merket was leading a global software cracking group from his Texas bedroom—the only business school he ever attended. Hacker's Edge is the improbable story of how that unconventional education propelled him from the digital underground to the halls of Facebook, Amazon, and Reddit.

But this is not a story about stock options and catered lunches. It's an unflinching look at the brutal cost of ambition: a battle with addiction that nearly ended his life, a marriage that buckled under the strain of startup culture, and a humiliating professional failure that coincided with a debilitating health crisis.

At his lowest point, a venture capitalist told him he lacked the “killer instinct” to win. He was right. Merket's edge wasn't being a killer; it was being the guy who had already been broken and knew how to get back up.

Raw, witty, and deeply moving, this memoir is a testament to the power of resilience and a survival guide for the underdog in a world obsessed with ruthless tactics.

A lot of entrepreneur's autobiographical books I've read make it feel like the author had it all figured out, even when they're failing. Setbacks are just an opportunity. But this one really left me seeing the side I've experienced personally - some things (especially health related, while sacrificing so much for work) just suck, and all you can do is focus on what you think is most important through it all. Prioritizing God, family, and doing what you think is right regardless of the outcome are the central themes, and while the book doesn't truck you into thinking you'll always win if you stick it out, it shows a journey that makes sticking it out meaningful

Raw and unfiltered, not a how to, just a window into the effort, costs, and priorities to live an entrepreneurial life

Ryan does a fantastic job highlighting the twists and turns in life that lead you to where you are today. At any one moment, a single good choice can lead to your greatest success or a bad choice can lead to consequences you may not want.

From school sports to company conferences, Ryan keeps the reader/listener engaged in the story of his life. Giving whomever the “edge” by exploring what’s fascinating to them by breaking down the system that makes it all possible.

Hacker’s Edge isn’t just a book about the tech space. It’s a book about life and the lessons you can learn from those that have done it.

Do yourself a favor, invest in this book, the story, and collect the dividends of knowledge that later on you will cash out when you inevitably get into similar circumstances Ryan found himself in.

That will be your edge…
