Healing

This is an interesting read. While I much enjoyed Matt Chandler’s commentary on Song of Songs, it was much more analytical and systematic. This book is deeply emotional and sexual, and that comes with pros and cons.

At times, I felt she took the language and translated it to our spiritual relationship with God too literally… and it felt awkward as well as likely inaccurate. She also was highly emotional and shared deeply personal and a bit too detailed stories for my comfort. I’m not ready to say whether she is right or wrong in this, but it was… awkward.

The flip-side: I do think the sexual parallels should draw much stronger spiritual ties between us and the Lord than we as Evangelicals often discuss. It is an awkward line, but Brestin dives in and though it made me uncomfortable at times, it was also deeply… healing. Whether you are married, divorced, single, or widowed, you are a sexual creature designed for connection. Brestin touches on the earthly bonds and shares many examples of sexual brokenness that can healed by Christ. It was quite beautiful.

The heart of God is the gospel story

Truly enjoyed the book! Author brings out the love that God sheds on His children. Instead of the blessings we enjoy from God, the Best Blessing is God Himself. This is the cure for lukewarm Christianity.

Sarah Zimmerman does an excellent job reading the text. Her voice is easy to listen to. I’m very happy I purchased this Audible book!
