In the not too distant future things have changed, and Santa Barbara police detective John Harrow is stuck with the strangest case of his career. A serial murderer, dubbed the "Pop Top Killer", is scooping the brains out of his victims, leaving them scattered across the floor. As he works through the bizarre case Harrow discovers it might connect to national security issues far beyond his control. Calling on the Santa Barbara Medical Examiner, Dr. Ricky Goforth, and his former partner, Detective Mario Montemayor, Harrow picks his way through mysterious connections between the local university, a prominent pharmaceutical company and the local headquarters of the fastest growing new religion in the world, the House of Joshua. As bodies pile up he struggles to make sense of a growing level of insanity in the world around him, and try to keep from winding up as an inconvenience to an unknown power who would prefer he remained ignorant, and are willing to end his investigation with a bullet, if necessary.
