I'm not afraid of the shadow. He's the only thing keeping me alive.
I'm hiding in my father's closet, desperately picking the lock on a box containing an ancient evil...when he emerges. He doesn't seem all that evil, but neither did my friends before they turned into monsters.
I'd like to think that I don't need him. But I love books and he loves battles. I'm used to drinking tea and he's used to drinking the blood of his enemies....or whatever his kind drink. In a world stricken by plague, all my friends have become terrifying monsters, and I have no other option but to trust him to keep me safe. He'll teach me to hunt those monsters and I'll try not to fall hopelessly in love with him.
Heart of Shadow is a deep, dark romp (not steamy) with an unrelenting pace and cliffhangers. Listen at your own risk.

WOW this book is amazing! If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. The naivete of our heroine is believable and she ACTUALLY. LEARNS. instead of staying dumb and helpless like SO MANY FMC's I've read. The shadow guy? I can never remember his name but he is the SO. SASSY. and I love that.
The narrator? Amazing. Their performance really propelled the story forward. I love this and I can't wait to read the rest of this series.
WAY better than what I expected.

the main female protagonists can't seem to make up her mind. anxiousness and bad decisions isn't uncommon in stressful situations but she just keeps making bad decisions. I also don't like how she describes the main male protagonists in moments where she should be focused on not dying. i feel like not dying is more important? not how hot he is or his sexy his voice goes. and this all happens in the first day they meet each other. he's no better either.
I think this book is good for many, and I can see the appeal. it just wasn't my cup of tea. I will most likely not get the second book. I do however encourage anyone else to give it a shot. as this may just he your cup of tea where it wasn't mine
it was alright
