Barbara Holloway is a low-key attorney in Eugene, Oregon, who left her father’s high-powered firm to handle small legal problems for local residents and ponder her next move. But while trying to sort out her own future, two people, desperate for help, show up on her doorstep: former pro football player Martin Owens and his wife, Binnie. Binnie, who is mute, met her husband when she sneaked aboard his boat while it was docked in Haiti and smuggled herself into the US. Now Immigration is seeking to deport her back to Haiti, which would be a death sentence. Born to a woman from Belize who was kidnapped and enslaved by pirates, Binnie’s only hope is to prove her and her mother’s real identity. With only days to find the truth and protect Binnie, Holloway sets off for Belize. But what she knows is only the tip of the iceberg in what turns out to be one of her most complex, compelling, and dangerous cases yet.

Critic reviews

“Barbara is a compelling character—intelligent and capable yet vulnerable enough for readers to worry about the danger she encounters.” ( Booklist)

Magnificent story line

But I am beginning to feel sick at the amount of coffee that is drunk in her books. There isn’t a chapter where they are not drinking more coffee! Is this a northwest coast thing? Does this come from the cowboys and the settlers that made their way out west? I am from the east coast and the only place I have ever seen a carafe of coffee on a table is at a restaurant. People don’t have them in their homes as a regular thing. If you want coffee, you make a pot and pour further cups from the pot. What is this carafe business? This is serious coffee country. I have never listened to another writer who is so obsessed with coffee!
Aside from that, good book.

Okay, I do like the Kate Wilhelmina novels…

Truly unexpected twists and turns. I’m tough to please, but this book hit all the bells:

Drew my attention in immediately ✔️
Excellent character development & depth ✔️
Unexpected plot twists✔️
Ending I could never have anticipated.✔️

That last one is more surprising than I can express. Friends and family can attest to the movies and/or shows I’ve ruined by figuring out whodunnit. (I also love crossword puzzles, untying knots… those sorts of activities.)

Ms. Wilhelm was a fine writer who lives on through her wonderful books.

Happy with Heaven is High!🌤✔️

I am loving this series! The only downside was the pronunciation of Gutierrez. Goo-tee-air-rez. I know it's a moot point now but I had to say it!

Know the pronunciation. LOL!

this book apparently should be preceeded by Death Qualified since it picks up Barbara's story then. logically, it is out of order since it explains why she has the unique relationship with Vinny and Martin.
