Even the inhabitants of secluded Nethercote looked pityingly upon young Henrietta, the vicar's sister; her plain features seemed to almost guarantee her a solitary future. And yet she had a determined spirit and magnificent hazel eyes. So when her great-aunt Hester left her unexpected wealth, Henrietta set out to conquer London's glittering high society and confound them all.

But the fashionable elite was less than warm in its reception, especially when the newcomer, this bold minx, made clear her intention of winning the heart of one of society's most treasured gems: the irresistible, extravagant, heart-stopping Lord Beau Reckford, a prize wildly beyond her humble origins.

I dislike the narrator for this book. The characters sound old and shrewish. Even the men sound old. It is not good when the women characters are in their teens and twenties and they sound 80. It.made it hard to get through the book.

Bad narration

Perhaps I don’t understand the humor in this book, or maybe I don’t understand the desired audience. This story comes across as a historical book of mystery and romance meant for a young audience with how foolish and childish the characters are. I don’t know whether it is the author’s story, or the narrator’s telling, but it comes across patronizing. I have taken this book off my phone multiple times and then attempt to give it another chance. This is my third go around and I still have two hours to finish. …I’m not certain I can do it. The story doesn’t flow well and everyone involved is incredibly selfish or dim witted.

Patronizing storytelling is not for me.

Really good romance with lots of twists and adventures. I could not stop listening. M C Beaton is great.

Great read!

Although it's very long for one of her books, the story is different and the characters are fun. The heroine is plump and the hero is not conventionally handsome but they are funny.

One of my favorite MC Beaton stories
