October 25, 1864 Heck woke up slowly. His head throbbed, and everything hurt. He had to get away, but he didn’t know why. With an urgency he didn’t understand, he stood and walked farther into the woods. He kept moving until his body gave out, and he collapsed on the path.Hours later, Heck opened his eyes. He was cold and thirsty and sore all over. His head clearing, he began to remember. His step-father had beaten him again. After his mother died a month ago, the beatings had become more frequent and more severe. Somehow Heck ends up in the Union Army. He did not enlist. Sargent Malhoney takes him under his wing and helps him. He is a book worm and can fix anything mechanical. He becomes friends with a Chinese traveling laundry man who teaches him martial arts. Over time he marries and is a widower twice.He settles in the town of Oglethorpe, Nebraska and becomes a deputy sheriff and accidentally ends up owning most of the town.After a long and strenuous escape from assassins his second wife’s sister seeks him out for help.
