Have you ever tasted true freedom?

Russell Joyce was born with a rare craniofacial disorder called Goldenhar syndrome, where the left side of his face was not formed. Years of patchwork surgeries made him more outwardly presentable, but not without deep pain and physical and emotional scars. But a life-changing encounter broke through to him with a power he never thought possible, in the very place he never thought to look—his broken face.

This set Russell on a journey to understand what was hindering him and others from experiencing the power of God's grace and being truly set free. During a season of starting a new church in Brooklyn, New York, he learned how the broken places of our lives can be transformed when Jesus meets us in the realities of our woundedness. God doesn't love us despite our wounds but through those very wounds. By his scars we are healed, and we can find new depths of freedom in Christ, scars and all.

A warning: this journey will not be easy. A promise: it will be well worth the risk.

So heartfelt and sincere. Did not pull any punches. As a therapist I would recommend this to any struggling with trauma, self worth, and emotional pain that they would like to I fuse with the healing presence of Jesus. So raw and real. I really appreciated the narration in the author’s own voice. What a gift of vulnerability and what a triumph of the spirit.

Wrecked me in the best way.

Russell’s story is so relatable and funny highly recommend this. I listened to most of it while mowing my grass and driving down the road…recommend wearing sunglasses because like mine, your heart will soften and eyes may water a bit. I loved this book

Everyone needs to read this incredible book.

I really loved this book and how timely it was for me to read. I seem to be in an extended season of grief that is often held in tandem with love and joy and Russell’s poignant thoughts on good catastrophe’s really spoke to me. As a Christ follower and church leader, I was challenged to consider what my “myth” was— and that was something I took time to ask Jesus. Funny how quickly it was answered, and how vulnerable I felt asking it. Thank you Russell for sharing your journey and pointing us back to Jesus through it all.
