When college student Jake is left for dead on the side of the road, he has one thing on his mind: Learn to defend himself against the men that gay-bashed him.

And fight back or die trying.

At his sister's suggestion, he tries self-defense courses. Little does he know when he asks the man to teach him, he'll be guarding more than his body, he'll be guarding his heart.

Aspiring MMA trainer Benjamin is on his last leg, literally. As a wounded warrior, he's scarred from a broken heart that has nearly broken his spirit.

So when Jake approaches him for lessons and tells him his story, it touches his heart.

The more time Jake and Benjamin spend together, the more they realize they're becoming best friends.

The more time they spend together, the more they realize they can't live without each other.

The more time they spend together, the more they realize they're falling in love.

But Jake has a secret, one that could change everything....

They're step-brothers.

My second time through was better than the first. The story and overall impression is that it is an okay story. I don't think that it is the best in the genre, but a lot had to do with the delivery. Accidentally reading it has changed my perspectives.

Second Thoughts

Narrator wasn't the best, but by far wasn't the worst. great story and story line.

great story line, not the best narrator.

good story. though the voices sounded exaggerated and silly at times. the romance touched on primal attraction respect trust and the effects of childhood upbringing on all those things as well as real manhood.

primal attraction and real manhood

The storyline is fantastic. The D/s stuff is done in a very creepy way, though. the way that they keep harping on the familial connection is super weird and icky, too. The performance of Jake and all of the minor characters is decent. The performance of Benjamin is very, very awkward. It's done in the voice of what can only be described as a dirty old man. The pace of the performance in general (all characters) is way too fast, and the lack of normal pauses makes for a difficult listen. I couldn't tell if this was just really bad editing for time, though, or the performer.

There were so many places in the story where I almost couldn't even continue, and I strongly considered returning the book. The storyline itself saved the day, though. It's different and very good. This is most definitely one that I wish that I had read instead of listening to, though.

Oh, one last thing - in the beginning, there are some plot inaccuracies that are very jarring. Don't bother trying to listen back to see what you've missed. You haven't missed anything. The story itself seems to have been edited very poorly at some point, and doesn't stay on track. Thankfully, that doesn't keep happening throughout the book.

This is a hard one to review...

The storyline dipped into some light bdsm and had a far-fetched ending. I didn't like the narrator's voice for one of the main characters.
