In 1957, Melba Beals was one of the nine African American students chosen to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. But her story of overcoming didn't start - or end - there. While her white schoolmates were planning their senior prom, Melba was facing the business end of a double-barreled shotgun, being threatened with lynching by rope-carrying tormentors, and learning how to outrun white supremacists who were ready to kill her rather than sit beside her in a classroom. Only her faith in God sustained her during her darkest days and helped her become a civil rights warrior, an NBC television news reporter, a magazine writer, a professor, a wife, and a mother.

In I Will Not Fear, Beals takes listeners on an unforgettable journey through terror, oppression, and persecution, highlighting the kind of faith needed to survive in a world full of heartbreak and anger. She shows how the deep faith we develop during our most difficult moments is the kind of faith that can change our families, our communities, and even the world. Encouraging and inspiring, Beals' story offers listeners hope that faith is the solution to the pervasive hopelessness of our current culture.

Read with conviction and told with courage and faith, I Will Not Fear tells the story of one of the Little Rock Nine, something, honestly, I was a bit ignorant about. Ms. Patillo Beals tells one story after another of how her deep commitment to and trust in a faithful God not only provided, but protected her. This is the story of not only a deeply committed woman of faith, but a woman of undeniable courage, selfless bravery, and fierce determination. I was truly amazed at how these horrific things kept happening, yet she never gave up or gave in. She's my hero.

Amazing story of God's provision and protection

Melba takes us on a bumpy ride through her harrowing experiences as one of the Little Rock 9, her relocation to California, and the many challenges and successes she had over the years.
This is an important work told from the heart, and Melba's love for God's grace and consistent intervention is inspiring. I would highly recommend this book especially during these troubling times.

I would recommend this book. It is a powerful story of how God can give strength in times of fear.
This book spoke of prejudice towards people of color in ways that I had not considered. It helped to look through the eyes of someone who had experienced that prejudice. The author was able to balance this with positive experiences that she had also had with white people after she left the South.
God had a plan for Melba’s life and she had the courage to pursue it.
