The most religious and powerful people in Jesus’ time, well, we don’t even know their names. Their glory faded with them.

And yet the poor, the uneducated and nameless, well, we know them, their legacy if not their names, and they have changed history. It’s not what they did, but rather what Jesus did for them. You see, when Jesus honors a person, that honor is true legacy. We want to know them, and be known by them, because Jesus honored them.

A prostitute who had been healed, one day poured perfume on the head of Jesus. His own disciples, the famous twelve and others, rebuked her, said it was a waste. But Jesus rebuked them, and said that it was prophetic, beautiful, and that her act of worship would be told throughout history ‘in memory of her.’ Not in memory of Christ, not to glorify God, but in memory of her. Jesus said this. And even here, now, we are remembering her. (Mark 14:9)

If you could go back in time, would you prefer to meet this woman or Caesar Augustus, emperor of Rome and king of the world? I bet that you would choose to meet this woman – reformed prostitute and once demon-possessed. Why? Because Jesus honored her, and because of that her legacy has changed the hearts of millions over the last two thousand years.

So the real question is not who ‘honors’ God – who has the stage, the mic’, the education - but who has God honored?
