After her mother's untimely death, Clara Schwartz became distant, withdrawn. Her father, a renowned DNA researcher, lived in a farmhouse outside Leesburg, Virginia, where in December 2001 he was fatally stabbed by what seemed to be a ninja-style sword. Police arrested Kyle Hulbert, a troubled teen - and aspiring vampire. Kyle was Clara's friend, one of a circle obsessed with role-playing games.

Drawing on exclusive interviews with the killer, best-selling author M. William Phelps reveals a frightening subculture, the tragic collision of two young people's dark worlds, and its deadly consequences.

This book needed a lot of tightening through editing. Repetitious details were annoying, insulting to the reader, and were slowing the plot to a dull pace. I never felt I knew the characters (all unlikeable and not relatable) and therefore I lost interest early. I hoped for a big pay off at the end but the book just fizzled out. I am a William Phelps fan but this book was a dud.

I know this book was published in 2003 but studies now show that the mentally ill are far more likely to be a victim of a crime. We are likely to be the victim not the perpetrators.

Other reviewers said this book is repetitive and they're correct, but it's only the first part of the book.

I'm a big fan of this author. He does his research and writes with empathy. This is especially important in this
book as there is a lot of mental illness surrounding the crime.

Mixed with the mental issues is a lot of cold, callous disregard for human life. What's even more shocking to me
is that the victim was the father of one of the criminals. Horrible doesn't describe it.

I don't want to give any more away. You will know anyway, quite early on. It just boggles my mind to think about.

The narrator was perfect for this book.

5 stars.

Stick with it- love M.William Phelps!
