Pubblicata nel 1934, questa avventura di Philo Vance, solutore di enigmi polizieschi, ci porta in un'atmosfera quasi irreale, pur trovandosi ai margini di Manhattan. Esistono davvero i draghi?
Tutto sembra portare a questa conclusione, e Vance, erudito poliedrico, che spazia dalla mitologia alla ittiologia, ci porterà alla conclusione che forse la soluzione più banale è quella più probabile, nonostante la nostra voglia di novità ci porterebbe a preferire le soluzioni sovrannaturali.
