Un vero rompicapo poliziesco: un delitto commesso in una stanza ermeticamente chiusa. Leroux cita espressamente i suoi colleghi autori che hanno proposto rompicapi simili: Edgar Allan Poe e Arthur Conan Doyle.
Il personaggio in grado di risolvere il mistero è profondamente diverso da Sherlock Holmes: è un giovane reporter di appena diciott'anni soprannominato Rouletabille, che, a fine romanzo, l'autore promette di far diventare il protagonista di altri suoi romanzi. Ma il romanzo è davvero ben congegnato e nessun dettaglio rimane privo di spiegazione.
