She stared at the picture, squinting her eyes, as if she expected it to cometo life. But Dwayne had died with his secrets. Emmett was walking around with his. Anyone who survived Vietnam seemed to regard it as something personal andembarrassing. Granddad had said they were embarrassed that they were still alive. ""I guess you're not embarrassed,"" she said to the picture.

If you didn’t live through the Vietnam war, read or listen to this book.

I read this book the year it came out. Listening to it again was just as good. However, the actress does not understand Kentucky accent. There’s a different accent for the mountains, the Bluegrass, and the western coal fields. it’s subtle, but it’s real once your ears are tuned to it. It says different as the counties of York, Derbyshire, Cornwall in England.

Accent wasn't helpful.

Story was credible, but the quality of scenes and characters was sabbotaged by narrator's accent.
