One to Savor

I enjoyed James Purdy's In a Shallow Grave. I know this is described as dark and a horror story, but I must be jaded (and I do read a lot of super dark stuff) but I think everyone can handle this story. The subject is fascinating, and the characters are beautifully done. This is a book to savor and I definitely recommend it.

The audio version of In a Shallow Grave is nicely performed by Matt Godfrey.

Unique!

Another stellar title to be unearthed by Valancourt Books. Great uneasy vibe. Kinda like a gothic romance for men. Purdy is masterful with his ability to tell a big story in a short length. Some of the character changes did arc a little fast for me. I wouldn’t have minded if he had slowed it down to a longer structure, but as long as you pay careful attention to every word it’s easy to follow. And the writing is so beautiful you’ll want to hang on every word. Another masterful performance by Matt Godfrey. Highly recommended!

Unlikely angels and mulberry wine scar tissue

Garnett Montrose, a horribly disfigured war hero hiring a caregiver to deliver messages and massage his aching scars. Not an easy task. Until a servant and an applicant settle in and become more than just hired hands.

I’m not entirely sure why I liked this one as much as I did but it was really great and kept me engaged from the very beginning. Some great characterizations here and written very well.

Southern Gothic Tale

James Purdy was an undeniably talented writer. However, I found some of this story to be so confusing that I had to read it twice. Matt Godfrey’s narration allowed me to enjoy the audiobook more. IN A SHALLOW GRAVE is a beautiful, poetic piece of writing, but I'm left with so many questions.
