Stevie Diaz has a husband she loves and a job she hates. Her life is unremarkable—until she answers the phone at work one night, only to hear a woman fleeing for her life before the call abruptly ends with what Stevie swears is a gunshot.

Stevie Diaz has never been great at leaving well enough alone, and unfortunately she recognized the voice on the other end of the call. Now, she’s determined to figure out what happened. And if she ruins her own life in the process, well, it’ll be worth it to learn the truth.

For someone who hates secrets, Stevie keeps a lot of them. For someone who’s not a fan of being lied to, Stevie has a problem with honesty—maybe with herself most of all.

In the Woods Somewhere is a neo-noir story of love and friendship, obsession and betrayal, secrets and lies, and what happens when the weight of the past comes crashing down.

Revisiting this one in audio format honestly hit even harder. I loved reading In the Woods Somewhere, but the audiobook brought out things I completely missed.

The story follows Stevie Diaz, a 911 dispatcher who starts recognizing a voice on a call, and from there, it slowly unspools into this haunting mix of guilt, grief, and long-buried small-town secrets.

Stevie feels so real, especially through Tess Donelon’s narration. Her voice just gets the character, tired, hopeful, guarded. Even knowing how it ends didn’t take anything away; if anything, it made the emotional weight land deeper.

If you’re into slow-burn mysteries that stick with you long after, this one’s definitely worth a listen!

I wish I could get my credit back but I finished the book. I am writing this review so you won't be shocked. The main female character Stevie cheats on her oh so wonderful husband and almost every thing she does in the story makes you want to hate her. I am not sure if that is what the author was going for. As a romance daily reader, I want to like the female lead, they don't have to be perfect but moral yes.

Beware

I really enjoyed this book!
The protagonist is a smart, yet sassy, non-conformist that keeps you guessing.
I'm really looking forward to the second installment of the Stevie Diaz mystery.

Unique and progressive!
