Abandoning Ourselves to the God Who Loves Us

In the spiritual life, we need a central idea: something so basic and comprehensive that it encompasses everything else. According to Carmelite Father Wilfrid Stinissen, surrender to God, abandonment to the One who loves us completely, is that central reality. The life of Jesus shows us the centrality of abandonment, for it is truly the beginning and the end of his mission on earth.

In this simple but profound book, Father Stinissen distinguishes three degrees or stages in abandonment. The first stage consists of accepting and assenting to God's will as it manifests itself in all circumstances of life. The second is actively doing God's will at every moment of one's life. In the third stage, abandonment to God is so complete that one has become a tool in God's hands. At this stage it is no longer I who do God's will, but God who accomplishes his will through me.

This was a concise and actionable, at least so much as these type of religious topics are, book on surrendering to God.

If you’re at all interested in Carmelite Spirituality, listen to this excellent audio book: humility, detachment, charity. All well explained here, as is the difficult but necessary road to union with God.

Actual substance on the spiritual life, not mindless fluff

Narrator did a good job making a very content-rich book understandable. The author presents us with the interior shift we have to make, that is key to deeper holiness.

Best for Catholic members

Although I enjoyed portions of this book, the target audience is Catholic, and not necessarily all Christians. I’m not opposed to that, but I wish the book description would have been more clear and I probably would’ve not purchased the book because there is a lot of unfamiliar jargon for me
