もともと日本には、家長が大晦日の夜から元日の朝にかけて氏神の社に籠もって祈願する「年籠もり」の習慣があり、それが初詣の由来といわれています。
今では東京の明治神宮には三が日で300万人以上が訪れますが、実は、初詣が一般化したのは意外と最近で、鉄道が発達した1900年代初期以降といわれています。
