A cat cafe is a place where you can spend time around cats while drinking coffee or tea. コーヒーや紅茶を飲みながら猫と触れ合える猫カフェ。世界初の猫カフェは、1998年に台湾で誕生しました。
日本では、2004年に大阪で最初の猫カフェがオープン。2005年にはわずか3店舗でしたが、2015年には全国で約300店に達しました。
日本の猫カフェブームは海外にも広がったといわれ、現在では世界の主要都市でも猫カフェが続々誕生しています。
東京の住宅事情は猫を飼うのにあまり適していないため、都内には、約60店の猫カフェがあるといわれ、猫を飼うことができない人々にとって、猫と触れ合える貴重な場所になっているようです。
