Introduction to Ecological Psychology is a highly accessible book that offers an overview of the fundamental theoretical foundations of Ecological Psychology. The authors, Julia J. C. Blau and Jeffrey B. Wagman, provide a broad coverage of the topic, including discussion of perception-action as well as development, cognition, social interaction, and application to real world problems.

Concepts are presented in the book using a conversational writing style and everyday examples that introduce novice listeners to the problems of perception and action and demonstrate the application of the ecological approach theories to broader philosophical questions. Blau and Wagman explain how ecological psychology might be pertinent to both classic and newer issues in psychology. The authors move beyond the traditional scope of the discipline to effectively illustrate concepts of dynamics, evolution, self-organization, and physical intelligence in ecological psychology.

This book is an essential guide to the basics for students and professionals in ecological psychology, sensation and perception, cognition, and development. It is also indispensable listening for anyone interested in ecological and developmental studies.

As a non-expert (I’m a psychotherapist who stumbled on this book on Audible and bought it on a whim), I was initially intimidated. In chapter one, I quickly realized this was going to be a much bigger and more complex paradigm shift than I’d expected. But as I kept listening, I found the content surprisingly accessible. The writing style—and especially the author’s way of reading—made it not just understandable but genuinely enjoyable.

Julia Blau (who performs the Audible version as well as co-authored the book) comes across as the kind of academic who not only loves her work, but would also be a lot of fun to get coffee with. Her sense of humor really comes through in the way she reads the text. I also really appreciate how faithfully the authors grounds the ideas in scientific research. I’m about halfway through, and the book is already reshaping my understanding of the mind and how things work.

For anyone interested in broader questions about the nature of consciousness and perception, I highly recommend this book. It offers a neat and (at least for me) novel perspective.
