Is it possible to embrace the inherent dignity of womanhood while still cherishing the Bible?

Many, both inside and outside the church, are concerned that an orthodox understanding of the Bible is threatening and even harmful to women. After all, the Bible has a number of passages regarding women that are deeply troubling. But is that assessment accurate?

In this fascinating look at God's work of redemption from creation to today, Wendy Alsup explores questions such as:

  • How does God view justice and equal rights for women?
  • What does it mean to be made in the image of God?
  • How have the centuries distorted our interpretation of how God views women?
  • How did Jesus approach the Old Testament and how does that help us understand difficult passages today?
  • What is the difference between a modern view of feminism and the feminism that Scripture models?
  • How does the Bible explain the Bible to us?

Using a Jesus-centered understanding to look at both God's grand storyline and specific biblical passages, Alsup gives practical, accessible tools for understanding the noble ways God speaks to and about women and the dignity he places on his daughters.

I did not want this book to end. Wendy’s careful, conscientious research and teaching brought clarity and cleared the fog created from various teachings over my 65 years in the church. Rightly dividing the Word, she explains the role of women in terms that elevates our role because of Jesus while clearing up the gross misinterpretations often given to the subject of “submission,” I especially was blessed by her explanation of the role of “helper.”

And now it all makes sense...

I have read many books about biblical gender issues. Starting in high school I began to read books by mainstream Christian authors that described biblical femininity in one perspective. I wish I could have read this book rather than those back in high school. I would have saved myself years of pain and suffering, due to the biased view and interpretation of scripture I was taught. Wendy is not afraid of the difficult scriptures, stories, and questions; rather she hits them head on. I highly recommend this book.

A must read for all believers in Christ

Saw some new and helpful possible explanations of verses, also saw a hint of misunderstanding of social justice versus biblical justice. Helping the vulnerable get access to justice, versus making sure justice is objective without respect of poor or rich once in front of the judge.

Thorough presentation of difficult bible verses pertaining to women

This is something I personally needed to hear, and I needed to hear it logically addressed by an educated woman of faith.

Logically and eloquently answered.
