A comprehensive examination of the struggle to reconcile philosophy and Islam.

From the introduction of Greek Philosophy into the Muslim world in the eighth century, right through to modern times, Majid Fakhry charts the evolution and interaction of philosophy, theology, and mysticism in the Islamic context. Highlighting key individuals, movements, concepts, and writings, Fakhry also explores the conflicts and controversies between anti- and pro-philosophical parties that have characterised the development of Islamic thought.

Editorial reviews

Majid Fakhry condenses centuries of thought surrounding philosophy and its role within Islam in this illuminating collection, a must-listen for beginners hoping to learn more about the religion. Fakhry explores the introduction of Greek philosophy into Islam around the eighth century, highlights important texts and figures in the movement, discusses the controversies surrounding philosophical thought amongst Muslims, and shows what role it has within modern Islam. Fakhry provides brilliant insight, delivered with an authoritative tone by Raad Rawi, who has a professorial air. Rawi's voice is also melodious and fluid throughout, making this comprehensive introduction a marvelous listen.

This was an excellent book. The way in which the topic was handled was absolutely fantastic, the narration by Raad Rawi is fantastically entertaining, they manage to make an otherwise complicated topic into an easy read, and overall the quality of the production value is really high.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I highly recommend this audiobook. It's intelligent, well organized, relatively easy to follow, although some passages are very complex and require serious concentration or following along with the actual book. This audiobook is written by Majid Fakhry who is an internationally recognized scholar in Islamic philosophy. Highly recommended.

Beautifully written, nicely narrated, dense

The book is insightful and exhaustive, covers all Islamic philosophers that appeared anywhere in the Muslim world. While text is interesting, it was made more accessible by the powerful and precise narration.

Great narrarter

The narrator butchered the Arabic words (some names of authors/philosophers, many of the books/works, and much much more of the nouns). The author seemingly aware of the criticism of AlGhazzali rather than the contents of his works; the referenced critique was true lt unfair to the arguments listed by AlGhazzali in “the incoherence of the philosophers”, but in fairness to the author, that will need a much longer book on its own.

Unfair for AlGhazzali, but otherwise very good
