Was the Civil War really about slavery? Or was it a war fought over money? Civil War historian Samuel W. Mitcham Jr., (Vicksburg, Bust Hell Wide Open) opens his fascinating new book, It Wasn't About Slavery, with Dr. Grady McWhiney's claim that "what passes as standard American history is really Yankee history written by New Englanders or their puppets to glorify Yankee heroes and ideals".

Relying on 19th-century sources, Mitcham lays out his case that slavery was not the primary cause of the Civil War and that the Civil War narrative taught in schools today is wildly misleading.

This book gives a huge eye opener to a person like myself who was taught that the war was all about slavery. The book delves into just how damn corrupt our government has been since day one. Even if you think this book is biased it makes you look at the big picture.

A great book for those taught by history teachers

Don't let the title put you off or offend your sensibilities: the Civil War was NOT "all about" slavery, something most every Southerner has heard from elder relatives, passed down from generations who lived it. If you don't listen to anything else but Chapter 14 (X1V): Tyranny & Emancipation, you've had your eyes opened enough to see that the VERY atrocities being carried out today were in Lincoln's playbook. It's uncanny — and scary. This entire book outlines, in detail, the highlights from said relatives about the TRUTH of "The War" and the lies consistently taught as fact beginning with young school children's first history lessons. The author's research is thorough and unquestionable. It should be required reading, not a mere, "if you want to know . . . read this book" suggestion. Here is the horror show being replayed even today. Lincoln was no one's hero, and to even say that labels one the "r" word, unfortunately, but grow up and face facts. Don't live in ignorance any longer. As for the narrator, well, I pictured him sticking out his tongue at the end of nearly every paragraph. What drama. JUST READ THE BOOK, stop with the theatrics! Whoever hires readers for Blackstone Audio needs to be kicked to the curb. Luckily I now have a copy of the book so no need to listen to that "so there!" reader again.

Now we know where the current regime got its playbook

This book describes in great detail the events that led to the war and gives the listener quotes and numerical figures that seem to be left out of the narrative of this time period. The author does have some biases, however, if the listener can get past these biases I believe this book will paint a clearer picture of the people and events of this time period.

Very detailed events that led to the war
