During the reign of Justinian, the Eastern Roman emperor from 527 to 565, a measure of restoration took place as the empire's greatness was restored for a time. Under Justinian, the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa was conquered, and Sicily, Italy, and Rome returned to the empire. The south of the Iberian peninsula was reclaimed as the province of Hispania.
