For Example:
A guy was talking about lifeguarding and that caught my attention because I spent years lifeguarding. I mean, that's how I worked my way through school. It was as a lifeguard. And he said, when you're being trained as a lifeguard. You never, ever get into the deep water if there is a struggling victim.

I mean, if they're thrashing and struggling around, never get into the water with them.

You're always told to throw them a towel, give them a pole, throw them a buoy, whatever. But don't go in there with them because if they're fighting and you get close to them, they'll grab you. They'll grab you around the neck, which is where they'll grab you and you'll both go under.

And that pretty much is what Al-Anon has taught me to do.
It has taught me to love somebody that is struggling and drowning with alcoholism and to love them without going under with them.
