At 19, while working the midnight shift at Gerawan Farms, I saw her — a pale, barefoot girl in a black dress, then a white one, walking alone along a dark country road. Dogs barked frantically, and when she climbed into our truck for safety, she vanished in seconds with no trace.

La Foca, my coworker, later told me an old story about a murdered woman whose spirit roams the orchards, testing intentions. We hadn’t done anything wrong, so she left us unharmed.
