Sally and I have learned some wonderful and painful lessons in 56 years of ministry. We served as missionaries in Kenya, then as church planters in England and have planted and pastored churches in the US for the last 35 years. In “Legacy of Love” we look honestly at our journey out of brokenness and a deeply dysfunctional father image into freedom. First by me becoming a father to my family, then together learning to be leaders in the body of Christ and today functioning as a spiritual father and mother to many.

This metamorphosis didn’t happen overnight or from one dramatic encounter. We’ve encountered numerous challenges but, in each circumstance, Sally and I found a lesson to be learned and a victory to celebrate as we took each step in the process of becoming an authentic spiritual father and mother. Each chapter of “Legacy of Love” begins with a defining moment in our lives and the insights we learned through it in our journey toward being an effective and trustworthy spiritual father and mother. Then the second half of each chapter is devoted to laying a biblical foundation for the truth and lessons we learned. The goal is to give a solid foundation for the reader to apply the principles we learned in their own lives and ministry.

After many years of personal experience and pastoral ministry we have found that the majority of character issues we face can be traced directly back to emotional wounds caused by their fathers. No matter how well intentioned our earthly fathers were, we all find some level of disappointment or brokenness. There were missing affirmations and a feeling of security that we longed to receive from our fathers and other experiences we wish had never happened.
