John Ajvide Lindqvist’s international bestseller Let the Right One In is “a brilliant take on the vampire myth, and a roaring good story” (New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong), the basis for the multi-film festival award-winning Swedish film, the U.S. adaptation Let Me In directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman), and the Showtime TV series.

It is autumn 1981 when inconceivable horror comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenager is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last—revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day.

But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door—a girl who has never seen a Rubik’s Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd. And she only comes out at night. . .

Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So cut the lights and press play—if you dare.

In this modern age, a good vampire story is quite hard to come by which makes this work all the more enticing. It is likely this book ranks among the darkest of novels but earns that title not through shock factor or traditional terror but by showing a reality so stark it will make you believe it’s a true story. Amazingly, and even more fascinating and disturbing, is that this is not even the heart of the tale. Childhood and the difficulties that come with it is the focus of this darkness, a pitch black that is inconceivably deep and yet never completely obscures the wonder and lightness of being young. The juxtaposition of eternal existence as a damned creature, cursed to live forever as a child, with the loss of innocence that traditionally signifies childhood’s end is a masterstroke by Lindqvist that makes this book so much more than the sum of its parts.

This book really stuck with me long after I finished it. The story is well-written and suspenseful, and the narrator, Steven Pacey, does a great job of building the atmosphere and capturing the mystery and horror. Pacey really brings the characters to life and makes the story feel real. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good thriller or horror novel!

This story still sticks with me.
