A warm June afternoon in King’s Cove is interrupted by an explosion. Following the sound, Lane goes to investigate. Up a steep path she discovers a secluded cabin and, hiding nearby, a young Japanese girl injured and mute, but very much alive.

At the Nelson Police Station, Inspector Darling and Sergeant Ames, following up on a report of a nighttime heist at the local jeweler’s, discover the jeweler himself dead in his office, apparently bludgeoned, and a live wire hanging off the back of the building.

As Lane attempts to speed the search for the girl’s family with her own lines of inquiry, Darling and his team dig deeper into a local connection between the jeweler and a fellow businessman that leads across the pond to Cornwall and north to a mining interest on the McKenzie River.

Great story! Lane helps her husband solve another mystery in Kings Cove. All the great characters are involved.

interesting history

super interesting history of balloon bombs...never heard of them before... and also glad Iona is addressing the Japanese internment and awful discrimination they faced after the war.

Beautiful use of language

It’s fantastic to listen to a well read story that was carefully written and edited. The setting is gorgeous, the characters well developed, and the story interesting.

Darling was REALLY annoying in this one

The story and mystery were both pretty good, but why is Ms Whishaw making Insp Darling such an ass?!? While he's never wanted her involved in police business - a stance that has gotten more and more ridiculous with each book - he is absolutely as insulting in this outing as the obvious chauvinists he professes not to understand. His applauding only Lane's cooking and how good she is with children, rather than her brain and her understanding of her own former business, made me want to hit him over the head. And his derision of Ames has certainly gotten old.

This was a re-read of the series for me, which I've generally found delightful. I had wondered why I hadn't finished the last book, but the answer is clearly and unequivocally Darling.
