In Like Life's eight exquisite stories, Lorrie Moore's characters stumble through their daily existence. These men and women, unsettled and adrift and often frightened, can't quite understand how they arrived at their present situations.

Harry has been reworking a play for years in his apartment near Times Square in New York. Jane is biding her time at a cheese shop in a Midwest mall. Dennis, unhappily divorced, buries himself in self-help books about healthful food and healthy relationships. One prefers to speak on the phone rather than face his friends, another lets the answering machine do all the talking. But whether rejected, afraid to commit, bored, disillusioned, or just misunderstood, even the most hard-bitten are not without some abiding trust in love.

Moore’s characters and feeling for endings are always memorable, surprising and worth a rereading. Highly recommended.

These short stories by Lorrie Moore are the most exquisite stories I’ve read/listened to in a very long time! They are poetic without pretension. They are thoughtful and romantic without being flowery. They touched my soul so deeply I want to hug her! And the narrator, Jane Oppenheimer! Wow, what an outstanding performance of each story! I’m
So grateful to have stumbled across this book!

Not sure if it’s artistic or just downright sad and depressing. I plowed through it hoping for some redemptive element, but no.

Not sure what kind of philosophy Moore is reading, but I hope she finds what she’s looking for. For me, this isn’t it. I can relate to some of it. But if there are two roads and we get a choice, I’ll take the one with hope.

Maudlin and Depressing

Some of the stories are interesting portraits but some are, to be frank, boring. I would suggest skipping a story you don’t like until you get to the good ones.

Lorries Moore's stories always blow me over and leave me dumbstruck. She is amazing. Self Help is my favorite but this is right up there.
