How would you ensure your family survived a modern nuclear war in America? In the late 2020s, two families find themselves caught in the middle of a nuclear war with China, fighting for survival. Carson Akins and his friend Neal Reiter find themselves trapped in unenviable, life-threatening situations while war rages and fallout descends around them. Carson, a high-tech engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area races against the clock to rehabilitate a 70 year old fallout shelter for his family. Across the bay, Neal must get his wife and disabled five-year-old daughter out of Silicon Valley and to safety in Oregon. Little do either of them know it is too late as the warheads explode and deadly fallout descends. Neal, a former US Air Force nuclear weapons technician, struggles knowing that weapons he maintained have now killed millions while Carson makes difficult choices about the survival of strangers. Their ordeals test their faith as they wrestle with the place of suffering in what appears to be the last days. Realistic, well-written, and engaging. Kept my interest throughout the story...I liked how the author kept the story interesting and suspenseful without making all the characters cliche archetypes and didn't try to impress the reader with overly nerdy infodump in an attempt to impress the reader with how much nuclear war knowledge he possessed. Great audio book and well worth a listen.

Loved it

Story was ok. The worst thing was the computer-generated narrator. Very annoying and comical when it mispronounced words or tried to convey emotion.

Just OK

This is not like anything else in the prepper fiction genre. The author takes you on a journey most don't want to even think about. Before you spend anymore time and money focusing on just beans, bullets, and bandaids, read this book. Though not a big fan of virtual voice, the content more than makes up for it. The author's other books are the same great quality and thought provoking.

Thought provoking and educational

As always the AI naration is still a thing in development. Having said that, I liked this story for it's depth on the illustration of how a limited nuclear exchange could play out. I also appreciated it was not full of wild and panicked masses. This story has a very good handle on human nature and Christianity. It is very well done.
