What happens when a police officer goes outside the law?

When wealthy housewife Ella Watson is brutally stabbed to death in broad daylight it sends shockwaves through the Lake District community. Later that day, Keira Bradley meets the same fate but on the notoriously rough Beacon Estate.

DI Kelly Porter must run two simultaneous investigations, hampered by a boss always protecting his reputation and a housing estate where fear rules and no one speaks out.

Kelly won't rest until she has justice for both victims. But there's a traitor in the ranks. When the evidence points to someone inside her team, Kelly has to put feelings aside and work the case no matter where it leads.

A dark and gripping police procedural from million copy bestseller Rachel Lynch, for fans of Patricia Gibney and D. K. Hood.

There were so many characters introduced I had to keep going back to remember who was who. Also, if I’m not mistaken, towards the end it kept mentioning a Milly, wasn’t it supposed to be Josie?

I enjoyed the first few books of this series. While the series isn't great, it was enjoyable. This book unsettled me, turned me off, because of contradictory social stances that the author injected into the story. The premise was good: how the system treats crimes against the privileged (rich, white folks) with more rigor than folks, notably minorities, who are disadvantaged. Oddly, the author included a statement by the protagonist's boyfriend's previously-likable teenage daughter discussing how she likes Trump because he "speaks his mind" and "is funny." Why include this? It was jarring, inconsistent with the tone of the story. If the daughter (Josie) was either starting to morph into a neo-Nazi (i.e., take the plot in a different direction, turn her into a villian) or have a change of heart, maybe it would have make sense. This did not happen to the point before I bailed. It was just included in the story as a casual aside, a mention, no push back by the adults, and the story moved on, Shortly after reaching that point in the book, I could not continue listening to this book. I can't, in all good conscience, continue with this series. I wish that I could get my credit back.
The narrator is fine.
