Two girls went into the woods. Only one came back. . . .

Detective Chief Inspector Jonah Sheens is on the trail in this “riveting” (Publishers Weekly) crime novel from the acclaimed author of She Lies in Wait, Watching from the Dark, and Lie Beside Me

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: BookPage

Jonah Sheens is enjoying a moment of peace in a pub garden on his day off when a teenage girl wanders out of the woods. She’s striking, with flame-red hair and a pale complexion. She’s also covered in blood.

When Jonah races to help, the girl insists she’s fine. Then she smiles. It’s her sister he needs to worry about. Keely and her sister, Nina, disappeared from a children’s home a week ago. Now Keely is here—but Nina’s still missing. Jonah is sure Keely knows where her sister is—but before she tells him anything, she insists, he has to listen to her story from the beginning.

Is she witness, victim, or killer? And if Jonah follows the trail of clues in her story, will they lead him to the missing girl—or distract him until it’s too late?

Can't wait for the next one. Had me hooked from the first words. excellent book.

loved it

The writing and voice performances continue to be top notch. I wanted more about Juliet’s personal life (after everything in the last book, it felt like her story was put on pause and we were left hanging) and less about Jonah’s. I empathized with him forgetting about his partner and daughter, I also kept forgetting they existed. Their relationship felt forced, which can be okay if it serves character development, and dead boring, which isn’t okay.

Can’t get enough of this detective squad!

I was hooked from the first page. The details unfolded at just the right pace, especially in the beginning. The suspense kept building as the direction of the investigation changed. The detectives’ personal challenges did not add to the story in my opinion and were not necessary. All in all it was a really good story to listen to.

Engrossing story

This is the first time for me, listening to this author and narrator. I would listen to both again. Enjoy the story and the narration.

Good story

A tale that needed to be told. Twists are so satisfying. Narrators are exceptional at portraying all genders. John Hopkins especially is impressive with intricate character work.
