Susan Rogers Cooper has received rave reviews for her Sheriff Milt Kovak mystery series from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Kirkus Reviews. In Lying Wonders, Milt deals with some unfriendly faces from his past. As sheriff of Prophesy County, Milt must come to his ex-girlfriend's aid when her son, Trent, goes missing at the Seven Trumpets religious retreat. To make matters worse, when Milt arrives at the retreat, he finds the dead body of Trent's girlfriend.©2004 Susan Rogers Cooper (P)2004 Recorded Books Thriller & Suspense Mystery Detective Suspense Fiction Women Sleuths Women's Fiction

This is an entertaining little book, just the right length for a weekend road trip. The plot was a little cliched and somewhat predicable, but not necessarily in a bad way. The story moved along nicely and was engaging, even humorous at times. I enjoyed Milt's realistic attitudes about his wife, relatives, and deputies. Tom Stechschulte chose a gravelly, down-home voice for Milt and it fit well, though I thought he drew out words a little excessively at times. All in all, if you want an entertaining mystery that isn't necessarily deep, this will fit the bill. If half-stars were an option, I?d probably have rated this three and a half. It?s better than three, so I went with four.
