A college professor encounters a magical computer network and struggles against demonic forces, his life and the lives of his friends hanging in the balance. Aided by a genuine witch and the ghost of his murdered friend, his quest involves crossing the country to go up against the System Operator of the magic web. "The ghost in the machine" can be taken quite literally in this instance. On his hero's journey, the professor runs up against a menagerie of magical creatures, some comic, some threatening, one very dangerous. Not only space and time but reality itself warps to bring the story back to its beginning.
