Der unglückselige Inspektor Lognon ist vor zwei Tagen verschwunden. Von Lognons dauerkränkelnder Frau erfährt Maigret, dass seitdem schon zwei Mal amerikanische Gangster in ihre Wohnung eingedrungen sind, ohne sich um die Anwesenheit der Hausherrin zu scheren. Offenbar hatte "Inspektor Griesgram" eine heiße Spur, und offenbar war auch dieser Fall mal wieder eine Nummer zu groß für ihn. Maigret begibt sich auf die Suche nach den Gangstern.
