Quando il capo gli chiede di trattare con ogni riguardo il re delle macellerie, amico del Ministro, Maigret riconosce in lui Ferdinand Fumal, un vecchio compagno di scuola soprannominato Palla di lardo, e non riesce a trattenere un certo fastidio. Ricorda ancora la rabbia che aveva letto sul volto suo padre quando Fumal Senior aveva cercato di corromperlo. Ma quando Palla di lardo viene trovato cadavere il fastidio si trasforma in senso di colpa. Per la prima volta in vita sua Maigret sente di aver preso un granchio.
