We should be comfortable with the choices we make for the right reasons. Granted not all choices offer a simple solution and degrees of compromise come into play unless you are a dictator or a despot. Assuming you are neither then there is a very wide range of choices you can make which can seriously affect your life to make it better or not so good.
Whilst it's noble to be thoughtful and kindly towards others (not everyone deserves it - especially deeply religious people) if you don't put yourself firmly in the equation then you are forever going to be disadvantaged and that in itself will cause you to be both under par in life and not able to exercise your whole abilities.
