Fanny Price, a young girl from a poor family, is being raised by her rich uncle and aunt, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, at Mansfield Park. She grows up with her four cousins, Tom Bertram, Edmund Bertram, Maria Bertram and Julia, but is always treated as inferior to them; only Edmund Bertram shows her real kindness. He is also the most virtuous of the siblings: Maria and Julia are vain and spoiled, while Tom is an irresponsible gambler.

Over time, Fanny's gratitude for Edmund's kindness secretly grows into romantic love.

Not the most riveting of Austen`s books, but a beautiful portrait of Fanny -- set off against the shallowness and selfishness of most of those around her. Like most novels of that time, there is an ongoing critique of aristocratic pride -- contrasted with true greatness, intelligence and grace. I liked this book and it was very well performed by the reader. I will never forget Fanny!

Beautiful Fanny Price

The protagonists in this book adhere to a strict code of behavior that seems downright prudish these days. So it's necessary to view the plot and characters in the context of Jane Austen's virginal imagination and the mores of regency England. I can't help sympathizing with Mary and Henry Crawford, rather than being outraged by their so-called immorality. Nevertheless, the interplay of characters and the many romantic entanglements makes this one of my favorite novels, but Anne Flosnik gives a flat performance.

An Excellent Book

Jane Austen is, in my opinion, one of the best writers who ever lived. Her writing style is perfect, her stories are interesting, her characters are brilliant and her insight into human nature is extraordinary. Mansfield Park is excellent, but in my opinion it ranks below Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Emma but ranks above Sense and Sensibility and Northanger Abbey.

I wish Austen had lived to write many more novels, but in the meantime I listen and read her books over and over. They never grow old to me. Also I enjoy variation of her books, when they are well written. I am so in love with her characters that I crave listening to stories about them when they are featured in books from other authors. If you have never read a Jane Austen novel, I suggest you begin with Pride and Prejudice. The I imagine you will be hooked and will enjoy her other books as well.

Ann Flosnik does an excellent job narrating books of this nature. Her reading and accents are authentic.

Jane Austen is the best
