Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

Mansfield Park is the third published and perhaps most subtle of Jane Austen's novels. It tells the story of Fanny Price, who, at the age of 10, is sent from her impoverished household to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle and be raised alongside her cousins. Fanny grows up as a misfit, not truly a member of the Bertram family, but too genteel to feel comfortable with her parents.

In this production, The Online Stage presents a fully dramatized version of Mansfield Park.

Mansfield Park is my second favorite Austen novel. So I was excited to get this performance of the novel. I like most of the voice cast for the characters, though I am unsure of Edmund and Tom’s voice actors’ characterizations. I do, however, recommend this performance if you haven’t read the novel. It’s a good overall reading and performance.

But was very surprised by the poor quality of the reading. One of the performers had problems with his r's, resulting in an unintended Elmer Fudd effect. Another had problems with reading straight narrative without an over-expressiveness which distracted from the meaning of the words. I believe I will avoid any future "performance" books and stick with those narrators I know to be competent.

Jane Austen's classic writing cannot be faulted...
