Meet Me in Beirut

The year is 1975. Bill and Bob are two American friends on leave from their foreign study programs in Germany. They plan to drive across Europe and into the Balkans, with their sights set on visiting Istanbul and exploring the Turkish coast. Their plans take a sudden detour when they meet George—a renowned Armenian-Iraqi competitive bicycle racer with an irresistible personality and a flair for the dramatic. George says he is driving to Beirut with his girlfriend and her mother to sell his car, but in reality, he has a deeper plan.

The trio hit it off, and after several days of partying, George insists that the young Americans change their plans and meet him in Beirut where George promises to show them the times of their lives. They agree, and George’s plan is set in motion.

Beirut is everything that George promised it would be: a semitropical paradise that is beguiling and seductive. But unbeknownst to them, the Lebanese Civil War is about to explode, and even worse, they have a hand in it. Their very lives are on the line as they try to get out of Beirut before it’s too late.

Excellent read

Highly recommend adventure of 2 young fortunate and lucky Americans as they go on an expedition.

Such an interesting audio!

Bob and Bill may be two of the most foolish and fortunate Americans to have set foot on foreign territory. In this narrative, I respect them for their youthful naiveté and courage to assume that all would work out. However, another part of me has seen the television show about unsuspecting foreigners being imprisoned abroad and has been completely engrossed in every page as college students on vacation travel and party with a mysterious man touting a number of international business dealings that are never fully explained.

Brilliant book!

Meet Me In Beirut by Robert Tibolt, based on a true tale, is the ideal novel for individuals who enjoy traveling. Bill and Bob, two American college pals, are about to begin their foreign studies programs in Germany, but their plans are quickly interrupted when they encounter George, an adventurous Armenian-Iraqi guy. Fantastic book. You will not be let down.

This book was definitely entertaining!

This tale, based on true events, has a travelogue and adventure flavor to it. It is well-written and instantly draws the reader in. I loved the descriptions of food almost as much as the stories about places, people, and views! The tale is narrated in the first person and follows a group of young college students on a carefree trip across Germany, the Balkans, and Turkey.

Great story.

This was a great book to listen. I listen to the book in two sittings, which is unusual for me. Would make a fantastic film. This ride-along trip comes highly recommended.
