The discovery of the Nag Hammadi library in 1945 by a local peasant, Mohammed Ali al-Samman, near the Upper Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi, marked a pivotal moment in the study of early Christianity and Gnosticism. These thirteen papyrus codices, bound in leather, contained over fifty texts, many of which were previously unknown or only extant in fragments cited by early Church Fathers who often condemned them as heresy.
