The Information Age has been awesome, but like any period in human history, there are drawbacks. Smartphones have revolutionized mobile Internet usage and changed many behaviors in society. People have access to vast amounts of information around the globe in a manner that wasn't possible just over ten years ago, and this is beautiful. Like any tool, social media and the Net are misused by people, and it has lead to a decrease in individuals' soft skills and, at times, has resulted in mass hysteria. Despite people having access to more information than ever before, the rate of content has lead to a manipulation of the masses in society because average users are bombarded with information every minute and don't have time to critically think about what is being consumed. As a result of the massive flow of information, people become desensitized to major issues affecting their lives and the societies they live in. The psychological effect of this is increased dependence on devices to reaffirm the narcissism that's a natural byproduct of the empowerment of the gadgets and the lack of incentive to use high-order thinking to analyze what's being consumed. After all, another shocking post will be passing through your newsfeed momentarily, so why exert the energy? Thus, the cycle continues, and the holistic effect year on year of this has been catastrophic and set to get worse!
