The setting, up in the far northwest of North America, British Columbia to be exact,
was beautiful, tranquil and a home site seemingly designed for the new
settlers. It had the lake, the mountains, the granite peaks, and all. Privacy, isolation,
and friends in the local Indian village.
They named it Mirror Lake, for it simply stole one's breath away trying to take it all
in. But then, it had something else that was not easily seen.
Animals and people could not get near the water. Near it, or on it, no one survived. But
only crazy people swim in the great frozen lakes of BC. Too cold, always. So, they lived
above it, but not on it. Making do, as pioneers have done for centuries.
But there was more to it. Rumors of gold, of buried treasure, but no one could get near
the lake to find it. It was a mystery, all right.
