""If ever a couple was ‘meant to be,’ it’s Tess and Gus. This is such a witty, poignant, and uplifting story of two lives crisscrossing over the years, with near miss after near miss. . . . I couldn’t put it down."" — Sophie Kinsella

For fans of One Day in December, The Flatshare, and This Time Next Year, a wryly romantic debut novel that asks, what if you just walked by the love of your life, but didn’t even know it?

""TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE."" Tess can’t get the motto from her mother’s kitchen knickknack out of her head, even though she’s in Florence on an idyllic vacation before starting university in London.

Gus is also visiting Florence, on a holiday with his parents seven months after tragedy shattered their lives. Headed to medical school in London, he’s trying to be a dutiful son but longs to escape and discover who he really is.

A chance meeting brings these eighteen-year-olds together for a brief moment—the first of many times their paths will crisscross as time passes and their lives diverge from those they’d envisioned. Over the course of the next sixteen years, Tess and Gus will face very different challenges and choices. Separated by distance and circumstance, the possibility of these two connecting once more seems slight.

But while fate can separate two people, it can also bring them back together again. . . .

I really like a lot of her books but this one, to me, lacked depth of character and was rather expected, slow and dull. Narrated wonderfully!!

I really like a lot of her books it this on

While this is a typical rom-com, there are twists that I enjoyed, especially the ending. Struggles with grief and going about the everyday are refreshing and I enjoyed the two narrators. I started reading the book and decided to finish it via audiobook due to a long car ride. Laughter and tears helped the miles melt away.

Typical, yet not

First off, this is a slow-paced, melancholy romance. The emphasis is on character and coping with family tragedy rather than on the romantic potential of the (2) main characters, Tess and Gus, making a connection. I actually enjoyed the slow build, and the way the author developed these two people. But there was SO much tragedy and sorrow, some of it because Tess and Gus were always putting others needs before their own, and, frankly, it got to be a bit too heavy-handed. The ending is also bittersweet, so this is not a feel-good romance. If it had been just a bit less downbeat, and if Tess ad Gus's had been less self-sacrificing, I would have given it a (5) star rating.

Almost (5) stars

Honestly I just spent 9 hours listening to these two lives and how they intersect, obviously “meant to be” together but when they finally do get together, you only give them 3 extremely short chapters!???? 23 minutes???? Jesus Mary and Joseph that SUCKS. Whoever signed off at that ending needs to get their face slapped. Not fair or nice to your readers.

So Very Romantic and lovely but....no and here’s why:
