Jack London was one of the most prolific and imaginative writers America has ever produced. Many insist that his short stories are his most accomplished productions, and this collection includes eight masterpieces that showcase London's literary versatility and his genius at creating memorable, one-of-a-kind characters:

  • "Moon-Face" - a study of extreme motiveless antipathy;
  • "The Leopard-Man's Story" - passion and mayhem under the big top;
  • "Local Color" - a wandering polymath might be too smart for his own good;
  • "Amateur Night" - laugh-out-loud chronicle of a farm girl's bid to become a big-city journalist;
  • "The Minions of Midas" - a tale of terrorism perhaps more disturbing today than it was 100 years ago;
  • "The Shadow and the Flash" - life-long rivals strive to achieve invisibility in radically different ways;
  • "All Gold Canyon" - a miner and a claim-jumper battle for a mother lode;
  • "Planchette" - a young couple struggles against their own demons as well as forces from beyond the grave.

Jack London is what Mark Twain would have sounded like had he been dropped into early 20th century California.

He's a consummate story-teller, and some of his stories are funny in a quirky way, and usually doesn't overreach. If you like Jack London, you'll like these short stories. But the real story here is the reader, John Burlinson. He was great, especially with "Moon Face". He really brought the story to life, and his accents and chuckles were right-timed and entertaining.

This book is a series of short stories that are all interesting to listen to but it was the narration that stole the show. The character voices were fantastic with each one a match for the description of the character. The overall delivery was enjoyable and well paced.

The stories are of various lengths but each one is well told and easy to connect with.

I knew Jack London for Call of The Wild but didn't know he wrote short stories. These are all good stories. It was no surprise to see Jack London was a journalist (Google is great) - several stories have a newspaper/journalist references.

John Burlinson was a great narrator for these stories. He has a down home storytelling manner that was perfectly suited to this writing. Bonus: his female characters were excellently voiced - not artificial or forced, just infused with personality.
