I’ve often wondered at the meaning lurking behind the reported final words—moose, Indian—of Henry David Thoreau. For some reason, I’ve always imagined a somewhat dark, untold tale at their root. MOOSE. INDIAN. is just such a reimagining of Thoreau’s first trip to the Maine Woods—as he recalls the uncomfortably gruesome truth on his deathbed.

As a Thoreauvian and northern rural Maine resident, I happily gave this a listen (coincidentally on my way to Baxter State Park). It is an interesting and imaginative interpretation of Thoreau’s last words, and while I don’t think it is realistic for Thoreau, and I am unsure of what my fellow Thoreauvians may think, I can still appreciate it for what it is—a spooky and suspenseful short story about the wildness of northern Maine.

Interesting and imaginative interpretation
